Stand-alone system that need batteries
A photovoltaic (PV) solar off-grid system is a stand-alone power system that uses solar panels to convert the energy from the sun into electricity. The electricity generated by the system is used to power up devices and appliances, and any excess energy can be stored in batteries for later use.
Other than solar panels, charge controllers and inverters as the fundamental components, in order to ensure the practicality, reliability and effectiveness of PV off-grid solar system, is the presence of direct current (DC) batteries to store any excess energy that are generated from solar panel arrays.
It is because this stand-alone system, it means that you are only solely rely on this PV off-grid solar system, there is no electrical source from the national grid for this case.
But I only need solar energy during day time, still need a batteries?
Even though you plan to remove the batteries from your PV off-grid system and claim that you only require electricity during the day, you must keep in mind that there may be conditions when sun light radiation is extremely low, such as during the monsoon or winter season, and in situation like this, it might need supported energy that had being stored earlier in the batteries in order to power up your electrical appliances.
Practical for remote area, save more in a long run
PV solar off-grid might be needed in a case of a particular area especially remote and rural area where conventional power sources are not available.
Comparing to off-grid electrical source based on fuel or diesel generator, this PV off-grid solar system is obviously more practical in terms of logistic and more economical in a long run.
For example if your premise is located in a remote location, with poor road condition and difficult for transportation access, the supply of fuel or diesel to that premise might be very intimidating.
Less hassle, easy maintenance
Additionally, if your site is already remote and you do not need to be there constantly while also needing electricity, a PV off-grid solar system can be a better alternative with less hassle as you won’t have to worry as much about power outages caused by fuel shortages.
Even if it’s cloudy and gloomy outside, as long as there is sunshine, you will be fine. If your load isn’t too large, your batteries will have enough energy to last you through completely dark conditions, especially at night.
